NEC MultiSync LCD2335WXM
Most modern computer displays offer native high-definition resolutions but lack the AV inputs to make them useful in a home-theater environment. Not so with the NEC MultiSync LCD2335WXM, an attractive "do it all" LCD that provides AV connections for practically every need. Sizewise, this 23-inch widescreen display makes for an impressive PC display. Unfortunately, even with its AV inputs, its HDTV capabilities were marred by lack of support for protected digital content.
The LCD2335WXM's attractive silver and dark-gray frame rests on an adjustable base that provides 5 degrees of forward tilt and 20 degrees back. Rotation and height adjustments are not provided, however. AV connections located on the back of the display include a pair of component inputs, as well as S-Video and composite inputs. RCA and minijack audio inputs supply a pair of mediocre-sounding speakers mounted in an enclosure along the bottom edge of the LCD. An integrated NTSC tuner allows for the viewing of nonscrambled analog television.
DVI (digital video interface) and VGA inputs are available for PC usage. Unfortunately, the LCD2335WXM's DVI input lacks support for HDCP (high-bandwidth digital content protection)—making it incompatible with most satellite and cable receivers, as well as DVD players that offer digital video output.
The LCD2335WXM's integrated display controls, which are located along the top of the display, are easy to access, albeit somewhat difficult to read, as the silver-on-silver color scheme requires careful examination. The LCD2335WXM's remote control provides discrete input selection, but it lacks a backlight or glow-in-the-dark keys for use in dimly lit environments. The remote's Enter button is located in the center of a four-way directional pad, but it's recessed a bit too far, requiring more of a stabbing motion than a press to operate.
