The name Sony is derived from the word “Sonus” which stands for the “Greek goddess of sound”. The company was initially called ‘Tokyo Teletech’ but renamed in 1958. It was started by Masaru Ibuka and the first product was Sony TR-55, a commercially manufactured radio. After that quite a number of different products joined the band wagon.

The first innovative technology that they used in their products was Betamax system. Then the Trinitron displays were marketed by Sony and they exist till date. In 1983, the MSX systems for the computers were introduced and next year the Discman was launched. 1987 was the year when they launched their DAT systems. SDDS, Memory sticks, DTS system, Play station, Blu-ray and HD DVD are few of the popular technology enabled products available with Sony.

The journey of acquisition started in the year 1988 when Sony took over SCBS and renamed it “Sony Music entertainment”. They also acquired companies like Columbia Pictures Entertainment, Psygnosis Limited etc. Their joint collaborations include names like “ST Liquid Crystal Display Corporation”, “ST Liquid Crystal Display Corporation”, “Sony Ericsson,” “S-LCD Corporation” and many more. Recently they have taken over two popular names which are “Gracenote,” and “Bertelsmann AG's”. This shows that the company is gradually expanding itself.

Where are they based?

Bulk production of various products including the semiconductors, computers, LCD televisions, digital and video cameras is conducted in Japan till 2005. There are other countries like China, United States and Europe which manufacture a wide range of the Sony products.

Sony is pretty conscious about its brand name and this is the reason why they take part in the environmental conference every year. They are trying to cut down the emission of harmful gasses and other waste particles from the electronics goods manufactured by them.
