Difference between LCD and OLED TVs?
Technology has always fascinated man, especially electronic devices. If you have vowed to get the best television to your home, you might be lost in deciding on what's the best. While the markets are flooded with new-age LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) TV's, the new tough entrants are OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) TV's. So are you thinking what should you go for? It's truly enjoyable to compare the technologies. What's the "DIFFERENCE"?
Many similarities, yet striking differences. OLED TV defeats a LCD on color emission technology. When powered on, organic color compounds of an OLED emits tri-colored (red, blue, green) lights. Also, an OLED requires relatively less power to release these colors. Though LCD's are better than any ordinary TV's, they still lack behind OLED's in color technology. Moreover, OLED's boast of higher contrasts compared to LCD's. LCD's black levels are not competent to that OLED's, despite the fact that LCD manufacturers are constantly striving to get the contrast levels to those of Plasmas.
Viewing Angles - who is "PERFECT"?
Again, OLED wins the race in terms of viewing angles. OLED do not block the light, rather releases it. Since each pixel emits light, all the viewing angles of OLED's are a perfect watch. Again, LCD manufacturers try to match themselves to the OLED's angle qualities; they get trounced as the light gets blocked to improve the black content. Hence, contrast is not good in viewing angles. However, companies are now trying to improvise on the viewing angles through improved subtraction technology.
Functional use in computers - LCD's are better!
When it is the question of digital use or computerised display, LCD's play a better role. Sony has brought in the 11" OLED monitors for use with a computer. But, it doesn't live up to the high expectations of computer graphics. Hence, Sony's OLED at a resolution of 960x540 miserably fails. LCD's have upper hand in image displays from computers. LCD's have high colors with no flickering and so LCD's have higher pixels. Thus, LCD's complement the graphical applications of a computer with high clarity. LCD's are also a better option for playing video games.
OLED's for Undisturbed Video Play
Unlike LCD's, OLED's don't have "trailing" effect during any video play. They efficiently use the TFT due to the organic light emission. LCD's have tried to dress up themselves much like OLED's, still the "trailing" feature seems to prevail. You can feel this lag when you watch any moving scenes.
Overall Picture
LCD displays have a longer life than OLED's. LCD's can go up to remarkable 50000-70000 hours, while the organic colors of OLED's may not go beyond 10000 hours. Finally, what pulls the customer is the price tag! Again, the LCD's have an upper hand. A 15" LCD can cost you around $180, an 11" Sony OLED is mighty at $2500.
So, if you are a tech freak, OLED is good for you, don't worry if you drain your cash into it. But, remember LCD is not bad, as it would still give you a flavor of digital technology at an unbeatable price.
